'Fragile Flowers'
View item No 1 The detail illustrated on this page is taken from exhibit No 4 In the 19th Century the giving and receiving of flowers played a greater role in every day social life than they do today. In particular Victorian England evolved a complicated system most often called the 'Language of Flowers.' I n 1855 a list of these meanings was published by Kate Greenaway in a book of the same name, which was particularly admired and further interpreted in the United States of America. Flowers were given specific meanings so not only their intrinsic beauty could be admired but also the sentiments of the giver. Where possible we have given the 'Language of Flowers' meaning for the exhibits in this exhibition.
